Fennies help young people develop their career

Penny Toghill. Practice manager at Fennies Under 5s explains why the group of nurseries is committed to employing young people.

Fennies strives to provide the very best nurturing, education and care for each child. It recruits high calibre staff and offers them training and promotional opportunities. Penny Toghill the Practice Manager said, “I play an active part in working alongside the staff from Hawk training to ensure the programme is effective and monitor the progress of learners and give support as required”.

The company linked up with Hawk Training to begin the training venture in January 2010 with a first group of 10 apprentices starting on a Level 2 childcare programme. We have continued to grow our apprenticeship programme since then with staff now working on both Level 2 and Level 3 programmes. Penny commented that apprentices are aware of the need to be proactive during their training and research and develop their skills and knowledge to meet the standards of the qualification. "In the last three months we have recruited a further 10 apprentices to work at our nurseries. The development of the programme has provided some important benefits for Fennies. We are able to provide improved consistency for parents and children in the nurseries as many apprentices will work with us for three years giving us a more stable workforce."

Penny said staff were trained solely in the practices that Fennies considered important to its ethos. We are therefore producing high quality staff for progression within our company. We rarely recruit unqualified staff within the company that will not be starting on our training programme. Offering apprenticeships supports our local communities and young people. The apprenticeship scheme is ideal for young people who want to develop a career and study but do not want to be in the college environment she added.

Beech House work with childrens Traffic Club to win the competition in Summer 2008

The team at Fennies Beech House work with the childrens Traffic Club to encourage safer road use. Last year the children received traffic balloons and information on how to cross the road and the important things to remember - look, listen and think!!! The pre-school team read the stories and encouraged the children to talk about their experiences of crossing the road. To enter the competition children had to create a poster to create awareness of road safety. They all worked very hard and did their own piece of work which was added to a large poster with the help of Jenny (practitioner). The poster was sent in and we all waited news!! We did not hear anything until a letter arrived saying judging had been delayed because of so many nurseries had applied. On January 2nd when we returned to work we recieved a letter to let us know we had won the competition and would be awarded a prize and certificates. In April the children were presented certificates and our prize was a large box of dressing up clothes relating to crossing the road and people who help us.

Easter Party at Beech House

The children at Beech House had a fantastic time at their Easter Party when Moms, Dads, Brothers and Sisters came along to join in with the fun. There was a tea party, followed by an egg hunt with the children putting chocolate eggs in their baskets they had made and decorated. The day was finished with a parade of hand made Easter bonnets round the garden. A good time was had by all with prizes going to the best bonnets!!
